Traffic citations are not inevitable when you're pulled over. If you follow some simple advice, you could lessen the seriousness of a ticket or avoid them altogether. The things you can do to help your situation start as soon as you see the lights flashing in your rear view mirror. You should stay calm and not panic at this time. If you know why you could be being pulled over, keep that in mind if you are asked later. Do not slam on your brakes and immediately pull over to the side of the road. Put on your right blinker and continue at an even pace until you find somewhere safe with high visibility. This will start get the stop off to a good start. The more comfortable the law enforcement officer feels with the location of the stop, the less likely he is to be put on edge and subconsciously be more harsh when considering if traffic citations should be issued.

When you find a safe place to pull off the road, do so slowly and calmly. Additionally, pull over as far right as you can safely. The more space you leave for the law enforcement officer to maneuver, the better. The next step in avoiding traffic citations is turn off the radio in your car and ask any passengers to remain quiet and still unless otherwise ordered to move by law enforcement. If it is after dark, then turn on the interior cabin light of your vehicle so that the law enforcement officer is given full visibility into your vehicle. While they are approaching, roll down your window fully and place your hands in the proper driving position on the steering wheel.

It is also recommend that you not retrieve your paperwork, driver's license, and registration until specifically asked to do so by the officer completing the stop. The officers would prefer to keep you visible while you are reaching for paperwork. If you are reaching around while they are approaching your vehicle, then they are unsure as to what you might be trying to find, or hide, in your glove box or other area of the vehicle.

When asked if you understand why you have been pulled over, it is best to be honest. If you know that you were driving slightly over the speed limit or that if you failed to come to a complete stop at a light, then say so. Honesty is appreciated and can often allow you more leeway from law enforcement than feigning ignorance and in the long run, it can help you avoid traffic citations.
